• St. St. Cyril and Methodius, National Historical and Archaeological Reserve, Inner town, Borova Gora place - The construction of St. St. Cyril and Methodius monastery in Old Preslav is related to the 1000-year anniversary of the death of St. Methodius in 885, the conversion to Christianity of the Bulgarian people in 864 and later with the commemoration of 1000 years of Tsar Simeon’s reign. In order for this idea to be put into practice, in 1884 the Fourth General Assembly made a decision for a cathedral to be built. Construction work started in the end of 1897 but ended in 1918. The final touches were put in 1926 and on the following year – 1927 when it was 1000 years from Tsar Simeon’s reign, the cathedral was sanctified by the metropolitan bishop Simeon, the bishop of Varna and Preslav Metropolis. In 1993, the cathedral was repaired and renovated by the metropolitan bishop of Varna and Preslav in relation to the celebrations for 1100-year anniversary of the town of Veliki Preslav and later a sacred liturgy was held by Patriarch Maxim of Bulgaria along with Patriarch Teoktist of Romania and other representatives of the Ecumenical, Russian and Serbian Patriarchates and other local churches as well as the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

  • St. Archangel Michael Church - The church is located in a small beautiful park in the town’s centre. The facade represents a miniature part of the right side of Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia. The church’s foundations were laid in 1908. Construction works were postponed during the Balkan war (1912-1913). After that, the slow work started again but stopped for a second time due to a lack of money during the war in Europe. The residents of Preslav gathered money by going carolling and making donations and the villages in the vicinity also took part in the process. Building material was transported for free and many people helped in the construction works as volunteers. In 1930, the church was completed and in 1931 it was sanctified by the metropolitan bishop Josef. Liturgies in the church started and later in 1951 the decorations were completed. Many of the icons represent parts of the history of Veliki Preslav, of the Christianisation of the Bulgarian people by Tsar Boris I, etc. Some trustees of the church who took care of it at that time were Alexi Yanev, Enyu Kolev, Valcho Nachev, Nacho Peychev, Kosta Stoyanov, Seva Eneva and Atanaska Vasileva. In 1952 a new iconostasis carved in wood was made by a group, led by prof. Kushlev, the resources for which were provided by religious residents of Preslav.
  • St. St. Peter and Paul Church - The church was built in 1808 after a special berat (licence) was given. The authorities’ recommendations stated that the church should be dug into the earth, or stand no higher than the sultan, riding on a horseback. Destroyed by fire and later built again, the church still keeps its original design. The iconostasis is very interesting; the panels under the icons show scenes from the Old Testament – the creation of the world, Adam and Eve, their life in Eden, the original sin and the couple’s expulsion. The iconostasis shows no apostolic order but the life of Jesus Christ, represented with icons. The two icons next to St. Mother of God and Jesus Christ are very interesting. These are the church icons of the saints Peter and Paul, made by the artist Nikola Vasilev from Shumen. An inscription with the names of the church-donors and the year of its construction – 1885 could be seen. The other icon is the one of St. Panteleimon or the so-called Public icon as the local chorbajii (rich peasants) provided the resources for it. It is done by the icon-painter Anastas Kraklisyiski from Lozengrad. The pulpit is unique and symbolises the Noah’s Ark. The balcony that existed in the past was kept, the acoustics is very good and the church’s choir sings from there.
